Interest of others

18 August 2011

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

The greatest problem that we all face is that of how we view ourselves and our own self importance. We all are achievers and we enjoy it when others recognise this because this just affirms our importance. With time this becomes an expectation and when people do not respond to us as we expect they should we are affronted and upset. The fact that you can do the things you do and who you are should not make you believe that you are better than others. No matter how menial the task, each task has its own skills base and knowledge requirement to do it properly.

When your interests become my interests and your success becomes my goal in life then my attitude to you must change. All people that we meet are able and capable of doing and being a better person than we can be, so in humility we help and give them every opportunity to succeed. This process is putting the interest of others before your own and this is in fact the perfect definition of love. Seeing someone you love succeed is a joy and honour, and when their plans come together and their dreams are fulfilled we share in them.

Be encouraged today to do nothing from selfishness or conceit.

David
