US help for African scholars ... and it's all about "twinning"

Colleen Butler and the Sunday school ... the children of St Mark's are our investment in the future

The Twinning Programme of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools partners Districts capable of providing funds with those that are in need. The Districts in the USAT Region are twinned with the Lwanga District in Africa which includes the countries of Kenya, Nigeria, Eritrea, Ethiopia and South Africa.

A significant component of Twinning is the participation of Lasallian schools in the Region which are each partnered with a Lasallian school in English-speaking East Africa and South Africa. Every year, Lasallian students in the U.S. and Toronto contribute funds for their African twin school. Over the last 15 years, contributions have reached over a million dollars which has provided education to thousands of economically poor students in Africa. The funds are used for student tuition, salaries of teachers, maintenance and expansion of school facilities, purchase of books and class materials, and other essential school expenses.

The Christian Brothers Conference coordinates the implementation of the Twinning Program in the Region, facilitates communication between the twin schools and serves as a resource centre.
